In the 1960's, NBC television in Washington, WRC TV had
signed
on a national kiddie show called "Bozo the Clown", and they
got Willard Scott, weatherman on NBC's Today Show,
to star in the thing. Bozo did a lot of personal appearances, at shopping malls,
fairs, etc.
A local McDonald's restaurant got in the act and Bozo appear
at an opening. Before too long my Bozo was a regular fixture
at area franchises. When WRC dropped the show,
McDonald's, now hooked on clowns, invented Ronald McDonald.
Also during the 60s, PEZ was licensing the right to make dispensers of
popular kids shows such as Popeye, Casper, etc. and no one was more popular than
Bozo!
